Learning to Forgive
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Colossians 3:13
Let us clear away what forgiveness is not, because the confusion keeps people bound for years. It is not saying the wrong was small. It is not trust handed back automatically. It is not a door held open for someone to walk through and hurt you again.
Forgiveness is you putting down a weight you were never built to carry. The resentment you have been holding was never punishing them — most of the time they have no idea it is there. It has only ever been heavy on you.
And the verse gives the measure: forgive as the Lord forgave you. Not once the apology arrives. Not once they have earned it. That is not how it was given to you, and it is not how you are asked to give it.
It may take a long time. It may need to be done again tomorrow, and the day after. That is not failure — that is what forgiving something real actually looks like. Begin badly. Beginning is the part that counts.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, You know what I am still holding. I want to put it down. Help me begin, even badly, today. Amen.
